Found In Him: Scripture for Chapter 1

Welcome to our study–Found in Him: The Joy of the Incarnation and our Union with Christ, by Elyse Fitzpatrick.

I know you’re going to love this book because it will help you to marinate in the truth that Jesus came to be with us so we can be with him.

There’s lots of Scripture in every chapter. Sometimes the verse is quoted, and sometimes it’s just a reference. If you’re like me, you tend to read quickly over familiar verses without stopping to let them sink in. You may also glance at references and think, “That’s nice” or “I’ll look that up later” or “I think I know which one that one is.” In any case you will probably open this book, but like me, you might not open your Bible.

I’m eager for us to get all we can from this book. Elyse will help us understand and connect the truth of the incarnation to our lives. But I know that God speaks to us most personally, most comfortingly, most forcefully, when we are face to face with Him in the Scriptures.

That’s why I’ll be posting a 5 Day Scripture Study for each of the chapters. As you make your way through each chapter in the book, you can focus on a few Scriptures each day. It’s a tool to help us all. If you don’t have time to look at every verse I’ve listed, don’t stress about it. We can be confident he’ll use whatever piece of his Word we read to nourish our life in him.

In him. That’s the key. And that’s what this book is all about.

Chapter 1: From Beginning to End It’s All About Him

Day 1: Luke 24:13-35. Read straight through this story. When have you been downcast and sad because you didn’t realize the risen Jesus is right there with you? Ask him to open your eyes to his presence in the Word and in your life.

Day 2: Genesis 1:1, John 1:1-3. Read and compare these two passages. Have you ever had the joy of working on a creative project with a dear friend? Think about Father, Son, and Spirit creating together and planning (Plan A!) salvation together. Your salvation–and all it would cost–was his joy from first to last!

Day 3: Genesis 3:1-10. Read all 10 verses and notice how the plural (“you” is plural in verses 1-5) pronouns give way to the singular. Do you feel alone? How many of Adam’s 4 statements in 3:10 resonate with you? Alienation began that day.

Day 4: Genesis 12:1-3, Galatians 3:13-14. How big and complete was the blessing God promised to Abraham? What was his plan all along to deliver on that promise? That’s how far our God goes to be faithful. Today if you’re in Christ you’re not under a curse, but his blessing.

Day 5: Numbers 21:4-9, John 3:14-15. Read the Numbers passage. What makes a bigger impression on you, God’s punishment for their sin or his provision for their salvation? Read the John verses. How do Jesus words change your view of the fiery serpent story? Rejoice today that the instrument of judgment became the instrument of salvation in Jesus Christ.

Have a great time in Chapter 1! I’ll connect with you again on Friday…
